The VLSI design course is designed for a diverse group of students, including aspiring lawyers, engineers, and business majors; however, students will feel the most at ease in the class if they are not daunted by the early-college mathematics covered.
The goal of the instructors is to educate students about the intricate physics, radio frequency (RF) spectrum, markets, market sectors, infrastructure, and challenges that lie behind current mainstream smartphones and tablets. This course will cover a wide range of topics, including the electronic transmission of information, the fundamentals and challenges of sharing a common medium, the physical propagation of radio signals, norms and patents, privacy and security issues, spectrum licenses and auctions and the societal impact of wireless communication services and applications.
In addition to being required to complete directed readings, video sessions, and learning exercises, students who are taking the course to earn a certificate will also be expected to complete several multiple-choice quizzes and, during the course’s final two weeks, to create a project that they have chosen from among several available options.
